Health Gauges is the coaching app I'm building for truck drivers: nutrition and lifestyle education that fits nights, truck stops and the sleeper. My coaching clients are testing it on iPhone right now. It isn't open to the public yet.
Free when you join: the printable Cab Health Pre-Trip checklist, plus each week's Check Your Gauges lesson before anyone else.

The problem
The job shows up in your body.
Long hours in the seat. Truck-stop food. Sleep broken into pieces. Shifts that cross three time zones by Friday. Generic health apps assume a kitchen, a gym and a 9-to-5. You've got a hot case, a 30-minute break and a sleeper berth.
61%
of 1,670 long-haul drivers in a national NIOSH survey reported two or more health risk factors, a list that includes 6 hours of sleep or less and no physical activity.
Sieber et al., Am J Ind Med 2014 (PMID 24390804)
−20%
sleep efficiency when people ate and slept about 12 hours off their body clock for 10 days in a small lab study. Sound like a month of flipping nights and days?
Scheer et al., PNAS 2009 (PMID 19255424)
2×
About twice the driving errors (101 vs. 47) in a 2-hour simulator when people were mildly dehydrated. Water vs. bathroom stops is a real trade-off.
Watson et al., Physiol Behav 2015 (PMID 25890276)
What Health Gauges is
One app, built around life on the road.
Health Gauges is the client side of my coaching practice: food, supplements, sleep and daily habits, coached in a way that fits a life in the cab. Here's exactly where it stands, feature by feature.
In the app
What my testers have now
On my coaching clients' iPhones today
Sign in with a code. A code sent by email each time. No password to forget at a truck stop.
Today. The day from their protocol, in order: on waking, with each meal, at bedtime. "Breakfast" means the first meal after waking, whatever the clock says.
My protocol. Each supplement with dose, timing and a "Why this?" explanation, plus foods to add, foods to cut and daily habits.
Weekly check-in and questions. Two minutes before the Thursday call, and up to 10 questions for Kevin to go through on the call.
Safety check. If something typed sounds urgent, the app says what to do right away, with buttons to call 911 or call or text 988.
Next build
Coming in the next update
Built and running; reaches testers' phones in the next test build
Kevin's full health assessment on the phone. It adapts as you go, saves as you go and picks up on any phone.
A results page in plain words, with no scores or jargon: how your health foundations look (digestion, blood sugar, sleep, stress, food and water) and where Kevin will start.
Delete my account from inside the app.
Planned
What we're building
In the plan, not built yet. No dates.
"Would Kevin eat this?" Scan a barcode, snap the hot case or pick from a chain's menu and get Kevin's verdict for your plan, with a better pick at the same stop.
Cab kitchen. Grocery lists for 7-, 10- or 14-day runs and five-ingredient recipes for 12-volt cookers and air fryers.
Sleep in the sleeper and movement at stops: split-sleeper coaching and 5-, 10- and 15-minute routines for the lot or the cab.
Get ready for your DOT physical. Preparation only: it never certifies anything. The medical examiner decides.
Android and a web version.
Built for drivers
A driver's app, not a generic one.
These are the design rules. Some are on testers' phones now. Some are rules for features still to come, and we say which.
In the app
Easy to use in a cab
Big buttons that work with gloves, high contrast, dark screens that are easy on the eyes in the sleeper at night, short plain words.
In the app
Safety first
Anything a driver types is checked for warning signs, and what to do is shown at once. It's not an emergency service: call 911, or call or text 988.
In the app
A coach's tone, not a game
Progress and weeks on protocol. Never points, badges or leaderboards.
Next build
Kevin's assessment, not a quiz
The same assessment Kevin's practice uses, adapting to each driver's answers.
Planned
Never asks for attention while the truck moves
We're building it to notice driving, switch to audio only and hold reminders until the next stop. Federal rules ban hand-held phone use while driving a truck.
Planned
Works with no signal
Your protocol, schedule, lessons and reminders will live on the phone. Today the app keeps what was last loaded on screen instead of going blank.
Planned
Runs on your body clock
Reminders will hang off "I'm up," meals and "going to sleep," not the wall clock. A night driver's morning is whenever they wake.
Planned
The AI only talks about your plan
Any AI answer will come from your own record or Kevin-approved content. It will never give general medical advice or change a dose.

Who's behind it
Coaching from the guy you already listen to.
You know me from the show, where we run the numbers on the business of trucking. I'm also a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, and I coach drivers on food, supplements, sleep and daily habits that fit life on the road.
Health Gauges takes the way I already coach my clients and puts it on the phone in their pocket.
I've owned businesses for 45 years, and the lesson is the same for your truck, your money and your body: know your numbers and check your gauges. I built Health Gauges so drivers can do that for their health out on the road, not just when something breaks.
Health Gauges is nutrition and lifestyle education and coaching. It's not medical care, and it doesn't diagnose or treat anything. If you take medication, talk to your prescriber before changing anything.
Free every week
Check Your Gauges.
While the app is in testing, I'm teaching one health foundation a week for drivers, with the research linked so you can check my work: your body clock, blood sugar at the truck stop, water vs. bathroom stops, sleep in the sleeper, digestion on the road and moving at every stop. The list gets each lesson first.
Not to the public yet. It's in private testing with my coaching clients on iPhone, and it isn't in the App Store or Google Play. Join the list and you'll hear first when that changes.
When does it open up?
There's no date yet, and I won't guess. When it's decided, the list hears first.
What will it cost?
Prices aren't set. When they are, the list hears first.
I have an Android phone. Can I use it?
It's iPhone first. Android and a web version are planned. Tell us your phone type when you sign up, so we know how many Android drivers are waiting.
Does joining the list get me in first?
Joining means you hear first: news about the app, plus the free weekly lessons. Who gets access first at launch hasn't been decided, so joining doesn't reserve a spot.
Is this medical advice? Will it get me ready for my DOT physical?
It's nutrition and lifestyle education and coaching from Kevin Rutherford, FNTP, not medical care. We're building tools to help you get ready for your DOT physical, but nothing certifies you. The medical examiner decides. For anything about your medication, talk to your prescriber.
What will you email me?
